Around half of the couples we see at the clinic are looking to conceive naturally. Some have started trying relatively recently and others may have already explored other options. Some patients are looking to conceive their first child, while others may be having difficulties having subsequent children. For female patients, the Chinese medicine approach will take a detailed look at the menstrual cycle in order to identify where improvements can be made. In conjunction with blood tests, scan results or Western diagnosis this leads us to a treatment plan. Similarly for men, the overall health is looked at to see what impact it is having on the quality of the sperm production.
In practical terms we will see a number of recognised conditions in the clinic, including:
- Unexplained infertility
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Immunological fertility
- Non ovulation/Amenorrhea
- Sperm quality
Which treatments can help?
Acupuncture is the most commonly used adjunctive therapy to IVF with many clinics recommending it alongside treatment. Used predominantly to increase success rates, it can also be useful in helping support couples as they go through what can be a challenging process. While acupuncture works to aid implantation rates and subsequent healthy pregnancy in assisted conception, IUI and donor egg cycles can be supported in a similar way.
Chinese herbs have a long history of use in aiding fertility. In Chinese clinical studies, daily or periodic use of herbs usually resulted in restored fertility within three to six months. Although the outcome for any given individual cannot be predicted, the clinical studies conducted in China indicate that about 70% of all cases of infertility (male and female) treated by Chinese herbs resulted in pregnancy or restored fertility. Included in these statistics are cases of infertility involving obstruction of the fallopian tubes, amenorrhea, absent ovulation, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, low sperm count, nonliquification of semen, and other causes.
I initially decided to try Chinese acupuncture to help with fertility issues. I had unfortunately had a failed round of IVF which had also in turn affected my M.S. Dr Jack firstly levelled out my relapse with my M.S. I then decided to try a more gentle fertility treatment combined with acupuncture and have managed to get pregnant, have a beautiful baby and have also stayed relapse free. It is the best I have felt for years! Paige and Jack are excellent in every way. Five stars. Highly recommended.

Fertility medicine has many ‘grey’ areas and leading consultants frequently have conflicting views on diagnosis and how to address treatment. We are able to discuss all potential options, not only the ones that we provide at the clinic, so clients have a good understanding of their choices. We believe that the more patients know, the more able they are to make the informed choices that will get them to their goal as quickly as possible.
